We had the pleasure of shooting promo shots for DJ ReOffender. He was looking to update his Facebook. Check out his remixes, because he played a set the whole time while we were shooting and it was a lot of fun to listen to.

For the shoot itself, I had him bring his usual DJ setup and we shot everything in a studio. What I loved about this shoot was that we were using multiple lights with an array of colored gels. Every light had a gel, so it was a challenge to match the right colors. Brandon can attest that this was not easy, because a gel does look one way until you blast light through it. I suggest that you take some time to test the gels before you start shooting.

Our setup was two backlights, a fill and a key. The goal was to shoot the DJ in a dark environment similar to where he would be performing. I used a bright color behind him to help separate him from the background and added a second backlight for contrasting colors. The fill light played opposite to the key light, which kept everything important in focus.

Besides covering the basic promo looks, I was interested in trying some open shutter photography. I wish he had more time to play around with it, but firing the key light separate from the camera shutter created a nice motion effect.

Overall I think the photos have a good energy and we learned a lot from the shoot and that always means success.
